15 Month Stats

Today, we had Joshua's 15-month check-up! He weighed in at an even 30 lbs. and is 32.5 inches tall. While he is still pretty big for his age, he is no longer off the charts, ha! That's a first for us! Seems he is slowing down a bit, which is ok with this momma, who has already purchased his summer clothes and is really hoping they'll fit! :-) He had to have a couple shots, which is always rough, but the nurses promised him that this was his last set of shots until kindergarten! Hooray! Kindergarten seems ages away, but I am sure it'll be here before we know it...I don't want to think about it!

This morning when we got up, it was SNOWING. Ugh. Thankfully, it didn't accumulate...we are SSSOOO ready for warm temps!

Well, I'd better get going...my boys are requesting food!

Goof Ball

Here is a video of Joshua watching Daddy play Wii. He was cracking up at something...maybe Daddy was losing?

He stood there and just giggled and giggled for a good 20 minutes! What a silly boy!

Mommy's Barber Shop

As you have probably noticed from the photos in recent posts, Joshua was in need of a haircut once AGAIN. That's 3 haircuts in 5 months! Mommy decided that rather than make another appointment for him, she would just try it herself. I plopped him into the highchair, put in a movie and went to work. He sat perfectly still and watched his movie while I snipped away...what do you think of the finished product? I think he looks pretty handsome...of course, I always think that! ;-)

Today we had a play date with some new friends in Fairview. They have 2 little boys, a 2-year-old and a 5-mo-old baby. The boys had fun playing together, and the mommies had fun socializing! We are hoping the weather warms up again soon so we can have lots of play dates outside!

Little man is teething AGAIN...this time there are a couple stubborn molars trying to break through. He seems to be handling it pretty well, tough guy!

That's all the news we have for now! Time for some snacks and a movie...goodnight!

What a fun day!

The weather here has been absolutely beautiful the past couple days, with highs in the 70's! We have been taking full advantage of the warm temps!

Today, Joshua and I went for a 4-mile walk with the stroller...it felt great!

Then when Daddy got home, it was time to play in the backyard! I have a feeling this kid is going to want to spend every second of summer outside!

He did nothing but smile and giggle the whole time we were out there!

Tonight and tomorrow are supposed to be rainy and dreary, so we soaked up as much of the sunshine as we could! Thank you, Lord, for spring!

Have a good week!

Love,
The Hollemans

Celebrating St. Patty's

No, we are not Irish, but I thought it might be fun to start some traditions, now that Josh is getting a little older. So, last night for dinner, everything we ate was GREEN! Green pancakes and green egg bake with sausage, green peppers, spinach and zucchini. Looks a little gross, but it was delicious!

Little man devoured two whole pancakes...does this shock anyone?!?!

And for dessert? Chocolate cupcakes with green cream cheese icing. YUM!

Happy St. Patty's Day, everyone!

10 Stress Strategies Every Mom Needs

These are from the workshop I went to with Jill Savage on Friday. Enjoy!

1. Take a day off every once in a while.
This means no kids, and no housework! Prioritize self care.

2. Increase margin.
We need more "white space" in our lives. Expect the unexpected. Be a human BEING instead of a human DOING. Children spell "love" T-I-M-E. Essentially, do not fill every moment of every day, because you will drive yourself (and everyone else) nuts!

3. Learn to say "no."
Never say, "yes" on the spot. If you have to say no to someone, don't make excuses and don't feel guilty. Your family comes first!

4. Take care of your body.
A healthy momma is a happy momma!

5. Expect interruptions.
The more we expect them, the more we will be gracefully able to handle them.

6. Refuel proactively.
Don't let yourself reach "Empty." Read a book, take a walk, rest, sleep, do whatever you need to do to make yourself feel full and rejuvenated.

7. Choose important over urgent.
Your family is IMPORTANT, the laundry is URGENT. Remember that sometimes our children become URGENT to our marriage, which is most IMPORTANT.

8. Step away.
When you feel yourself get angry or frustrated, step away for a minute. Stepping outside is effective, especially when it's only 20 degrees out there!

9. Ask for help.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for help. Have a friend come help you clean, or take the kids for an afternoon while you run errands. Most people will be happy to oblige.

10. Talk to Jesus.
He will give you the grace, energy and stamina you need. Don't ask him to change your kids, your husband, your circumstances...ask him to change you.

***Children may not remember what you taught them, but they will never forget how you made them feel.

There is nothing I love more than being a wife and momma, and I thank God every day for blessing me so richly.

Enjoy your Sunday!

The Mom Revolution & Advice for First Time Moms

Yesterday I attended the Hearts at Home National Conference in Bloomington, IL, with some girlfriends. This conference is a day especially for moms to spend time laughing and learning with other moms, sharing stories and trials of being a mom, gaining new perspective and insight into the challenges and wonders of motherhood. Mothers of all ages were in attendance, ranging from those who were newly expecting their first child to mothers of TWELVE children!

We started our day with a group session for which the keynote speaker was Jennifer Rothschild. Her testimony was beautiful and uplifting.

Following the group session, these 4000 women each went our separate ways to attend different workshops. One of the workshops I attended was called First Time Moms: Moving from Surviving to Thriving. The speaker was Jill Savage, who is the founder and CEO of Hearts at Home. She gave some excellent pointers for first-time moms that I think also apply to moms in all seasons of life:

1. Lower your expectations.
If you plan to get 4 loads of laundry done and only end up finishing 1, don't sweat it! Set small, achievable goals for yourself.

2. Allow more time for everything.
No explanation necessary. We all know every little task requires more time when you have a little one to care for.

3. Enjoy this never-to-be-returned-to-you season.
Yes, you may be stressed because your baby never stops crying, or doesn't sleep well at night, but don't wish that time away, because all-too-soon your baby will be a teenager.

4. Capture your memories.
You may think you'll always remember that funny thing he/she said, but you won't...write it down!

5. Consider motherhood a valid profession.
This is your JOB, and everything you do has a purpose. Keeping this in mind will help you mother more intentionally.

6. Trust yourself.
You know what's right for your baby and for yourself. Take other people's advice with a grain of salt.

7. Take care of yourself.
Naps are in your job description! Everyone is much happier when Momma is well-rested and healthy!

8. Cut yourself some slack.
You are not perfect, and you will make mistakes.

9. Get out once a week WITHOUT your child/children.
When she first said get out once a week, I thought, "I've already got that covered!" until she said trips to the grocery store with your children DON'T count...darn!

10. Find a moms group.
I really need to make this a goal.

11. Stop the comparisons.
You do not have to parent like other moms, and your child will develop at his/her own pace. Comparison breeds discontentment.

12. Keep your marriage first.
You are a wife FIRST and a mom SECOND.

13. Ask for & accept help.
There is nothing wrong with asking someone for help!

14. Be the parent.
Establish authority.

15. Connect your real mom experiences with the real Jesus.
One of the comparisons Jill made that really drove this point home for me was that Jesus was constantly being TOUCHED. The Bible says that the crowds PRESSED INTO HIM, which is exactly what our children do! It is important to be in constant prayer as a mother, and to remember that Jesus knows what we're going through.

I walked away from this conference yesterday feeling incredibly refreshed and rejuvenated, and excited to take what I learned and put it into practice!

Have a wonderful day, all!

Rainy Day Smiles

I just love it when I walk into the playroom and find this little boy with a book in his lap...hopefully that bodes well for him enjoying books when he's older! One of his new words is, "Book."

This one's a little blurry but I love that sweet smile! Doesn't he look so grown up in his hoodie and jeans? I feel like the weeks and months are just going faster and faster, and I am doing my best to enjoy every stage to the fullest! Lately he is looking SO TALL to me...I am interested to go to the doctor and find out his stats at the end of this month.

Josh is really learning to communicate what he wants. Today he got a bowl out of the Lazy Susan, which is where we keep all his sippy cups and dishes. He brought me the bowl and said, "Tatas, PEESE?" (crackers please?)! What a big boy!

Little man still has a bit of a runny nose, but that nasty tooth FINALLY broke through! Can you hear the Hallelujah Chorus? Mommy, Daddy and Joshua are all so relieved! We are now up to 8 teeth!

Doesn't he have the prettiest blue eyes? Just like his daddy. It's raining here today, so we are relaxing inside, reading, doing laundry and watching movies. Mommy is contemplating surprising Daddy with a fruit pizza for dessert tonight...YUM!

Have a happy Tuesday!

Blessed

What a wonderful weekend we've had! Thank you all for the birthday cards, wishes, gifts and love...I feel so very blessed!

Friday morning, these arrived at our door from my boys...aren't they beautiful?

Friday night Mike and I had our first date since December! We hired a sitter and went out for dinner, shopping and a movie. What fun! Thanks, honey, for spoiling me! :-)

Saturday was spent shopping in Peoria with my mom and sister. It was so great to have a girls day! Then the boys met us for a family dinner that night...we had a wonderful time!

Poor Joshy has been dealing with some major teething issues this weekend, and last night he was up intermittently all night long. Unfortunately, that means the rest of us didn't get much sleep, either. So today we are attempting to catch up on our rest. We hope you had a terrific weekend!

Love and blessings,

No News

There hasn't been much going on around here lately, and yet I feel as though we've been busy, busy, BUSY! I think it might have something to do with my 14-mo-old who NEVER stops and who has been extra hyper as the weather's gotten warmer, not to mention the allergies this momma is battling. I know, I know, I wanted spring to come...I've been pleading with God for warmer weather...but right now, these allergies are kicking my butt!

Love that sweet little face...doesn't he just get cuter and cuter? Of course, I may be a little biased... ;-)

Hope you all have had a great week!

Caught!

Yesterday, while Mommy was doing laundry, check out what this little boy was doing...

He pulled all my plastic grocery bags out of the cupboard and spread them all out on the floor...goofball! He was pretty proud of himself!

Needless to say, Mommy put them all away again, on a MUCH higher shelf where he can't reach them! Now he'll just find something else to get into, haha!

Have a happy Tuesday!
